Typhoon: Navigating Greece’s Shores for a Cleaner Tomorrow

The Athanasios C. Laskaridis Charitable Foundation’s vessel, "Typhoon," is a testament to the power of dedication and innovation in environmental preservation. This remarkable 73-metre vessel, refitted with state-of-the-art technology, tirelessly travels to the remotest corners of Greece, ensuring that the nation’s shores remain pristine and welcoming.

Since its deployment in 2019, the Typhoon has made a significant impact, cleaning over 1,453 shores and removing more than 168,188 kg of litter from the Cyclades, North Aegean, Saronic and Thermaic Gulfs, Crete, Sporades, and the Peloponnese. This monumental effort is part of the broader “Typhoon Project,” which aims to restore the entire Greek coastline to its natural beauty.

Typhoon’s mission extends beyond cleanup. It serves as a crucial research base for scientific teams studying marine pollution, contributing invaluable data to the fight against environmental degradation. Its dynamic positioning system and specialized equipment enable precise underwater examinations, making it an indispensable tool for archaeological research, such as the exploration of the Antikythera Shipwreck.

The vessel’s versatility is matched by the foundation’s commitment to comprehensive marine protection. With a dedicated crew of up to 10 cleaners, Typhoon tackles beach and in-water pollution, addressing contaminants that harm water quality and marine life.

The impact of the Typhoon Project has not gone unnoticed. It was honored with the “Sustainability Award” at the Lloyd’s List Greek Shipping Virtual Awards 2020, recognizing its significant contributions to marine conservation.

As the foundation continues its noble work, the legacy of Thanasis Laskaridis and Evi Lazou, ardent environmentalists and philanthropists, shines brightly. Their vision and resources drive the foundation’s efforts, ensuring that Greece’s natural beauty is preserved for future generations.

Typhoon sails forward with a clear mission: to give back clean shores to Greece’s inhabitants and visitors, fostering a culture of environmental stewardship and sustainable living.
