Methoni Castle: Shining Once Again

Methoni Castle, a living testament to enduring history, stands proudly on the south-western coast of Greece. Erected by the Venetians in the 13th century for strategic and defensive purposes, this maritime fortress was pivotal in controlling trade routes and safeguarding Venetian interests. Overlooking the Ionian Sea and offering mesmerizing views of Sapienza Island, Methoni Castle is not just a relic of the past but a vantage point of unparalleled beauty. Its iconic Bourtzi tower and grand gate adorned with the Lion of Saint Mark invite visitors to step into a world where history and breathtaking scenery merge.

One of the most visited castles in Messinia, Methoni Castle attracts many tourists daily. However, nearly a decade ago, the castle lost its luminous charm due to natural wear-and-tear, vandalism, and theft. The glow of Methoni Castle faded, leaving a shadow over this coastal marvel.

But change is on the horizon! Methoni Castle is undergoing much-needed restorations, including the replacement and repair of its spotlights. The Municipality of Methoni, along with the local and broader community, is tirelessly working to bring light back to the castle. Funding efforts are in full swing, and workers are on-site, meticulously breathing life back into the structure. Trial runs have already begun, with the castle partially illuminated on some nights, offering locals and tourists a sneak peek into the castle’s soon-to-be-restored glory.

The anticipation is palpable. Locals and visitors have flocked to the sandy shores, capturing exclusive snapshots of this historic event. Many have shed tears, moved by the deep connection to the village and the castle’s significant heritage. If all goes well, Methoni Castle will be fully illuminated by the end of June 2024.

This remarkable endeavor would not have been possible without the dedicated efforts of the Local Municipality, the Friends of the Castle committee, local residents, and generous donors. May the re-illumination of Methoni Castle become a beacon of hope and prosperity for all. Shine forth, Methoni Castle!
